Why Your FAQ Page Might Matter More Than Your Instagram

If you want your business to show up when someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity a question, the answer isn’t more social posts. It’s a proper FAQ page with clear questions and short, direct answers. And FAQs on relevant content pages / posts too.

AI search tools pull answers from pages built to be extracted, not from posts that vanish off a feed after a day.

In this post:

  • Why AI tools are changing how people find local businesses
  • What these tools actually look for on a page
  • Why FAQ sections do most of the heavy lifting
  • What you can do about it this week
  • What a straightforward first step looks like

People Are Asking AI Instead of Googling

Something’s shifted. People used to type a question into Google and click a link. Now they’re asking ChatGPT or Perplexity the same question and getting an answer straight away. No click. No visit to your site. Just an answer, pulled from somewhere.

That “somewhere” matters. If your business isn’t the source that answer came from, you don’t exist in that conversation. And here’s the bit that catches people out: a Facebook post from last Tuesday isn’t the kind of thing these tools read and trust. It’s gone before it’s useful. A proper page on your website sticks around and can be found again and again.

This isn’t an argument for dropping social media. It’s brand awareness, it has its place. But it can’t do this job on its own anymore.

What These AI Tools Are Actually Looking For

Strip away the jargon and it’s simple. AI tools want a clear question and a clear, short answer sat right next to each other. Not a page of marketing waffle about your “passion for excellence.” An actual answer to an actual question.

Local businesses have an edge here, oddly enough. A big national chain isn’t going to write a page answering “how much does a boiler service cost in Louth.” You can. And when you do, you’re answering something a real person is typing into an AI tool right now.

FAQ Sections Do Most of the Heavy Lifting

This is where FAQ pages earn their keep. A short question as a heading, followed by an answer in roughly 40 to 60 words, is close to exactly the shape these tools are built to pull from.

Adding structured data behind the scenes (it’s called schema markup, don’t worry about the name) helps confirm to a machine what your page is actually saying. Think of it as a label on a jar rather than making the reader guess what’s inside.

A plumber with a page answering “how much does a boiler service cost in [town]” will get picked up over a generic “About Us” page describing “years of dedicated service” every single time. One answers a question. The other doesn’t.

What This Means for You, Practically

You don’t need a marketing department for this. You need the five or six questions your customers actually ask you, on the phone or standing in your doorway, written down with plain answers.

Keep them current too. Pages that get updated now and then seem to earn more trust from these tools than ones left to gather dust, so it’s worth revisiting your FAQ every few months rather than writing it once and forgetting it.

One honest caveat: nobody can guarantee you’ll be the answer an AI tool gives. Anyone promising that is having you on. What a good FAQ page does is improve your odds. It doesn’t hand you a guarantee.

A Straightforward First Step

Write down the five questions you get asked most. Answer each one in a few plain sentences. That’s your FAQ page, more or less done.

It isn’t glamorous work. But it’s the kind of groundwork that keeps paying you back long after a social post has scrolled out of sight.

FAQ Answers, Straight from the AI Search Playbook

What is answer engine optimisation?

Answer engine optimisation, or AEO, means writing your website so tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity can pull a clear answer straight from it. Instead of ranking for clicks, you’re aiming to become the source the AI actually quotes.

Why isn’t social media enough for AI search visibility?

Social posts disappear off a feed within days and AI tools don’t read and trust them the way they read a proper webpage. A permanent page on your site keeps earning attention long after a Facebook post has gone.

How long should an FAQ answer be?

Aim for roughly 40 to 60 words per answer. That’s short enough for an AI tool to lift cleanly and still long enough to actually answer the question properly.

Do I need schema markup on my FAQ page?

It helps. Schema markup is structured data behind the scenes that confirms to a machine what your page is saying, a bit like a label on a jar. It’s not essential, but it makes your FAQ easier for AI tools to read correctly.

Can a business guarantee it gets picked by AI search tools?

No, and anyone promising that is having you on. A clear, well-written FAQ page improves your odds of being the answer an AI tool gives, but nothing guarantees it.

How often should I update my FAQ page?

Every few months is a sensible habit. Pages that get revisited and kept current seem to earn more trust from AI tools than ones written once and left to gather dust.
