The Moment I Knew You.com Wasn’t for Me

You.com is one of those multi-AI platforms that promises the world and delivers something more like a messy back garden. Harsh? Maybe a little. Ok. A tidy back garden. Is that better?

Anyway, for your twenty quid a month (or free if you’re a freeloader – we’ve all done it), you get access to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and a few others whose names I honestly can’t be arsed to remember right now. It’s got its own “Genius” mode and “Creative” mode—whatever they’re supposed to be.

In some ways, it’s trying to be everything: Google AI summaries, Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Claude, all wrapped up in a well-designed interface. Fair play to them for the look of it. But let’s be honest, like any website, nice visuals only go so far.

For starters, there’s no way to organise your chats – not that I could see. No folders. No projects. Nothing. That’s a proper niggle of mine with so many AI tools. Give us a way to keep things tidy, for goodness’ sake! Without organisation, you’re just left scrolling through a list of random conversations like some digital archaeologist trying to uncover lost treasure. And I really do mean ‘lost’.

A Year of Bugger All on You.com

I signed up for You.com yonks ago. Maybe a year ago? Paid for it for a few months, played around with it a bit, and promptly forgot about it. Since then, I’ve had maybe a couple of dozen chats on it—which is bugger all compared to the thousands of chats I’ve had on ChatGPT in the last couple of years.

Even Perplexity has seen more action.

Honestly, it’s like having a gym membership you use once a month because you can’t cancel it without guilt-tripping yourself.

Today, I decided to revisit it as part of a review spree of my AI subscriptions. Here’s where things went sideways. There’s no timestamp on any of the chats. Nothing. No “last updated,” no “started on,” not even a vague “a year ago.” Just a blank slate. That’s absolute pants. It’s basic data. If you can build a platform that juggles AI models, surely you can stick a date on a chat.

What’s in a Name? A Lot!

Then there’s the username debacle. My username is “m.” Not because I fancied myself as a Bond villain but because that’s what You.com assigned me.

Can't change your username on You.com

Can I change it? Nope. Have I tried? Yep. Did I contact support? Of course. Did they respond? Absolutely not. It’s like shouting into the void.

Even You.com Search is bad!

I even tried using you.com search (you.com/search) and asked it a simple question (about itself) “How do I change my username on you.com” and it gave me absolutely nothing about You.com in the results – which look like the old style Bing and Google!

Lousy search on You.com

Taking that into chat, all I got was some hallucinations about going into account and account preferences or something. Which do not exist on the platform.

So I tried chat… By asking it’s own ‘Research’ chat bot. And even that couldn’t give me an answer. “Within your account settings, search for options related to “Profile Management” or “Account Settings.” This section should allow you to manage various aspects of your account, including your username.” was a total hallucination!

So, We Are Done! Yes. Me and You (dot com) are so Done!

I get it. These platforms have priorities, but if you can’t manage the basics of being user-friendly, what’s the point? The moment a platform stops feeling remotely human (or at least seeming like it is trying to accommodate us humans) is the moment I’m done with it. So, You.com, here’s my parting gift: a very human “sod you, I’m out.”

Got Questions? I’ve Got Some Answers

What exactly is You.com?

You.com is a platform that combines multiple AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini into one interface. It’s trying to be a one-stop shop for AI-based queries and creativity.

Why didn’t You.com work for you?

It lacks basic features like chat timestamps and organisation tools. Plus, it’s impossible to change your randomly assigned username, which for me, was “m.”—a Bond villain vibe I wasn’t after.

Isn’t the interface good-looking?

Sure, it’s well-designed, but nice visuals don’t make up for missing functionality. It’s like a shiny new car with no steering wheel.

Would you recommend You.com?

Not really. Unless you like incomplete features and poor support, there are better platforms out there. ChatGPT and Perplexity have served me far better.

What’s your biggest gripe with You.com?

No timestamps on chats. It’s basic, it’s needed, and it’s absent. It’s like trying to organise a library with no labels on the books.
