Even ChatGPT Gets It Wrong! Lessons from Project Files

Have you ever asked ChatGPT a question, trusted the response, but later discovered it was completely wrong? Yep, me too. It turns out even ChatGPT has its off days, and recently, I stumbled across one of those moments. Thankfully, it led to an interesting discovery about Project Files (an alternative to Custom GPTs) that made the whole thing worth it.

Let me explain.

The Setup – Testing ChatGPT Projects

I’ve been exploring ChatGPT Projects – a cool new feature (probably only on paid accounts) that lets you upload files and set instructions for ongoing work (all chats in a Project). My main question was simple: if I start a new chat within a project, will it still reference the Project Files I uploaded earlier?

The initial response? No, it wouldn’t. I was told that Project Files were temporary and only accessible within the specific chat where they were uploaded. If I wanted to use them again, I’d need to re-upload them in every new chat.

That sounded… inefficient. But hey, ChatGPT said so, right?

The Twist – and Some Persistence

As it turns out, that’s not how it works at all.

When I did some testing (I’m a persistent old bugger) started a new chat within the same project, I noticed ChatGPT was referencing the Project Files by name. Curious, I tested it further. Sure enough, the Project Files persisted across all chats within the same project. The AI could continue pulling information from them without me needing to re-upload anything – which I certainly didn’t want to have to do and it didn’t make sense that I would have to.

This changed everything I thought about Projects. Suddenly, they became much more useful. No more uploading the same files over and over. All the files I’d added were there, ready and waiting, no matter how many chats I started.

What Happened?

So why did ChatGPT initially tell me otherwise? Well, it’s a good reminder that AI, as clever as it is, can sometimes miss the mark. The system likely interpreted my question differently or oversimplified the explanation. Either way, it’s proof that you shouldn’t be afraid to dig deeper when something doesn’t add up.

The lesson? Even AI makes mistakes, but those moments often lead to greater clarity and understanding… if you’re willing to look for it.

The Value of ChatGPT Projects

With this newfound knowledge, I’ve realised just how powerful Projects can be. The ability to persistently reference files across multiple chats means you can:

  • Streamline workflows for long-term projects.
  • Ensure consistency when working on multiple chats related to the same topic.
  • Avoid the hassle of repeatedly uploading the same information.

It also brings Projects closer to the functionality of Custom GPTs, making them a great option for structured, ongoing work.

The Takeaway – What I Learnt

This experience reminded me of two things:

  1. AI is only as good as the context it has, and it’s okay to ask twice if something feels off.
  2. Mistakes, whether human or AI, often lead to valuable discoveries. In this case, I learned that ChatGPT Projects are far more useful than I initially thought.

So, the next time ChatGPT gives you an answer, don’t be afraid to challenge it. You might uncover a feature (or a mistake) that makes your work a whole lot easier.

And now, for the FAQ crowd

What are ChatGPT Projects?

ChatGPT Projects are a feature that allows you to create a dedicated workspace with specific instructions and uploaded files. They’re great for structured, ongoing work where you need consistent AI responses.

Do Project Files persist across chats in a project?

Yes! Once you upload Project Files, they’re accessible across all chats within the same project. No need to re-upload them for every new chat.

How are Projects different from Custom GPTs?

Projects allow you to upload files and set instructions, but they’re tied to your account and can’t be shared. Custom GPTs, on the other hand, embed knowledge permanently, can include more features, and can be shared with others.

What happens if ChatGPT gets something wrong?

Don’t panic! Mistakes can happen. Use it as an opportunity to ask clarifying questions, dig deeper, and uncover new insights, just like I did.

Is it worth using ChatGPT Projects over regular chats?

If you’re working on a long-term project or need to reference specific files and instructions consistently, then yes, Projects are a game-changer. For quick, one-off tasks, regular chats might suffice.

Can I use Project Files for team collaborations?

Not directly. Project Files are tied to your account and aren’t shareable. For team access, a Custom GPT might be a better option.
